I've been thinking about the impact of stress and how we can reduce it. COVID-19 has had a significant impact on how we interact with others and go about our lives. And we know that a combination of stress and uncertainty can have a significant and wide-ranging impact on our mental health and our wellbeing.
The question is then; when you're overwhelmed in the moment, how can you quickly reduce your own stress, and what advice can you give to others to help them quickly reduce this?
Interestingly there's a simple hack that you can use. Anytime you pause and take a few slow breaths, you put yourself into a relaxed state. An easy way to do this as called 'coherent breathing'.
Here's how to do it.
Just find yourself a comfortable position and put one hand on your stomach. By doing this, you can make sure that you're breathing deeply from your stomach and not just from your chest.
Then focus on your breathing and count the number of breaths in your head. Breathe in for six seconds and then out for six seconds. Repeat for one to three minutes.
That's it! Simple as.
Coherent breathing is a simple technique that can definitely help if you're experiencing stress or anxiety. Give it a go and see how well it helps.
